Pair of Fritz Hansen “DAN” Chairs · Denmark, 1930s–40s
Rare Find — A pair of rare Fritz Hansen “DAN” chairs, designed by Søren Hansen (grandson of the Fritz Hansen founder) and produced in Denmark in the 1930s–40s. Part of the celebrated DAN series, these chairs were Denmark’s own interpretation of the bentwood café chair tradition — inspired by Thonet, yet distilled into a distinctly Scandinavian form: lighter, cleaner, and restrained.
Crafted in steam-bent beech with circular pressed plywood seats, each chair is stamped “DAN” beneath the frame, with traces of the original Fritz Hansen paper label still visible. The graceful bentwood ring under the seat and the curved backrest testify to the ingenuity of early Danish industrial furniture design.
Condition: Both chairs show a beautiful, time-worn patina, with honest wear consistent with nearly a century of use. One chair bears an old repair to the stretcher and back leg, adding character and history while remaining structurally sound.
These chairs are not just seating — they are living fragments of Danish design history, carrying within them the laughter of countless gatherings, the rhythm of cafés, and the quiet innovation of 20th-century Denmark.
Dimensions: height 75cm. seat width 37cm, seat height 49cm
Provenance: Danish private collection
Period: 1930s–40s
These are not just chairs; they are companions of history, holding within their curved backs the whispers of Danish workshops and the laughter of countless gatherings.
A soulful pair for the collector who treasures authenticity, imperfection, and the timeless grace of Scandinavian design.
Price 5500kr. / 740€
