A rare antique Continental German silver-mounted glass mustard or condiment pot, apparently bearing early German municipal silver hallmarks, including a distinctive griffin-type town/assay mark.
The griffin mark closely corresponds with historical German Beschauzeichen (town assay marks) associated with Greiffenberg/Greifenberg and related German towns where the griffin was used as a civic emblem. An additional, heavily struck hallmark has characteristics consistent with early German municipal assay marks illustrated in historical goldsmith references. Further research is required to establish the precise town, silversmith and date, so the attribution is intentionally left cautious.
The piece consists of a substantial cylindrical clear-glass body held within a silver lower mount, together with a removable domed silver lid with stepped finial and an opening/notch for a condiment spoon. The lid alone weighs approximately 116 g.
